Who is this for?
This is an immersive group for people who identify as neurodivergent and want to get to know their masking and unmasking processes better.
It’s also a group for people who don’t necessarily love groups – so it’s tailored around adaptability and options for participation, and follows a clear general structure each week so that participants will be aware of what we’re covering. The rationale behind this is so that people can engage with the content and their reflections more fully, whilst feeling free to stim, move around, share or not – essentially to show up how they want to.
Group numbers are limited to 15 people.
Aims
• To reflect deeply on your relationship with masking & thereby increase agency in choosing when and when not to mask.
• To express, explore & share thoughts, feelings & experiences if & how you want to.
• To provide tribe-finding opportunities for people who dislike conventional group work (eg warm-up exercises, verbal check-ins etc) & prefer to have adaptations & options baked in.
How to Join
- Book a voice or video call here with Anna, the facilitator. This is an opportunity to ask any questions or make any requests about specific adaptations – there’s no fee for this call.
- If you want to go ahead, register by paying the fee on the booking page.
- You will be sent the workbook a week before the group starts. It’s up to you whether you want to look at it beforehand – session 1 will cover the part 1 pages so you can print them out or write/ type out the responses during the session.
FAQs
By “masking” are we talking about camouflaging?
Yes. This isn’t an academically-focussed group, but for clarity – autistic camouflaging and masking are used interchangeably and also apply to other neurotypes. Masking/ camouflaging are defined as:
- Compensation: copying or mimicking allistic and/or neurotypical behaviours.
- Masking (confusing that it’s a subsection, I know): the suppression and/or repression of neurodivergent traits and behaviours.
- Assimilation: trying to “fit in” despite it causing potentially major discomfort and negative consequences.
Can I have my camera off during the sessions?
Camera on at the beginning and end would be appreciated, but if you prefer to turn it off during the session you’re welcome to do so.
Do I have to share?
Absolutely not. If you want to, you can and if you would rather not, you don’t have to. Sharing can be via the chat function and anonymous polls as well as raised hand speaking if you choose.
What’s the workbook for?
The workbook provides a pathway for your reflections. You can complete as much or as little of it as you choose. It is designed to help you thoroughly explore your relationship with masking and unmasking.
What if I can’t attend one of the sessions?
Ideally you would make it to all the sessions, but if not that’s ok. Reading through and/or completing the workbook pages will guide you through the key elements for that week so that you are ready for the next part.
I self-identify as neurodivergent. Can I attend?
Yes you are welcome.
Most discussion around masking is about autism, but I have ADHD. Will the material be relevant to me?
Yes. Although ADHD masking has received much less research and attention than autistic masking, many people with ADHD also describe hiding parts of themselves, working hard to fit in, and feeling exhausted by the effort.
This group explores masking across neurodivergent experiences, while recognising that everyone’s experience is unique. Rather than telling you what masking and unmasking “should” look like, the workbook and discussions invite you to reflect on your own experiences. You may also find yourself having those reassuring “ah, that’s me too” moments as you hear about other people’s experiences.
